"HOWLIN' SUCCESS"LOS LOBOS-WOLF TRACKS/THE BEST OF LOS LOBOS: Few bands have explored more rootsy territory than East L. A.'s LOS LOBOS...whether pumping out the thought provoking folk pop of WILL THE WOLF SURVIVE, the RNB-imbedded barnstormer SHAKIN' SHAKIN' SHAKES or the experimental KIKO & THE LAVENDER MOON, these cool cats obviously never met a groove they couldn't master. Crackling covers of pioneering Latino rocker RICHIE VALENS' LA BAMBA and C'MON LET'S GO were fluke radio hits, but provided little insight into their wide ranging talents and musical diversity. Fronted by singer/guitarists CESAR ROSAS (in ever present dark shades and chin whiskers) and DAVID HIDALGO, they also flirted effortlessly with jazz, Tex-Mex and alt rock, bringing lap steel, accordion, harmonica, banjo, sax and traditional Mexican instruments into the mix. For a peek into LOS LOBOS' deeper catalogue, the double disc anthology JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM EAST L. A. (which includes missing tracks such as THE NEIGHBORHOOD, I GOT LOADED and their rollicking DEAD cover BERTHA) is a recommended alternative to the tight celebratory sampler WOLF TRACKS.RATING: FOUR AMIGOS
