The Canadian Valentino Orchestra is a bit unusual. Their music is based in the 1920s pre-swing big-band tradition, but the 17-piece orchestra, which includes three strings, also can play quite effectively as an early Depression-era dance band. The arrangements are freshm and the material, while including standards such as "Sugar Blues," "Stardust," "Am I Blue" and even "Harlem Nocturne," is filled with obscurities (including "Five Pennies," "Grandfather's Clock," "Delirium" and the title cut), plus a couple of originals. The brief solos are fine (no big names here), but it is the exuberant sound of the ensembles, the general enthusiasm, and the strong musicianship that are most notable. 1920s collectors will want to check this CD out.
