Spring is a time of freedom, fresh air, and light. So is this album. From a lavish version of Rogers and Hart's "Where or When" and an inventive improvisation firmly based on Cole Porter's "From This Moment On" to Bert Seager's own inventions, Second Spring demonstrates strong talent and a firm understanding of jazz. Seager's lead soloing is as strong and emotive, with a comfortable sense of familiarity. Though Seager's compositions are fresh and new, like spring itself, they are also reminiscent of past greats. There is an air of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" in Seager's "Unforeseeable Changes" and the title track recalls a children's song about Easter bunny Peter Cottontail, another bouncy symbol of spring.
