For those who enjoy traditional Celtic music, the debut album The Blacksmith Band is a good find. From lively instrumentals, like "Scholar, Earls, Reconciliation (Reels)," to mellower, more soulful ones, like the accordion-flavored "South Wind, Hewlett," the Celtic Blacksmith Band do a skillful, ear-charming job. Be it jigs, reels, or waltzes, they make their way with equal aplomb, whatever the tempo. Whistle, fiddle, and bodhran interweave brightly on "Nancy," and there is agreeable guitar and bass throughout the selections. They lilt pleasantly on the vocals of "Hills of Connemara," a traditional Irish ballad about moonshiners dodging the Excise man. And they have a bit of wry humor on "Johnny Lad" ("I've never had a better lad, and I've had 29.") Traditionalists will appreciate that there are both male and female lead vocals on songs with masculine and feminine points of view. So welcome this engaging group of New Zealand musicians to the Celtic scene, pick up a copy of their debut album, and definitely keep an ear out for follow-up releases.
