Mr.jeka
Neil Young decided to have a blues band, and -- surprise! -- he's actually pretty good at it. It was evidently inspiring for him as well: of the 21 songs heard here, only two were from earlier records, 18 were new, and one was an unreleased rarity. The band sounds tighter & more authoritative in concert than they did on the studio album, living up to their mission statement: "We gotta keep you rockin, keep your soul from the blues". If there's an exception, it's the lengthy, meandering encore of "Tonight's the Night" .... but then, Neil's fans have come to expect that.On the whole, BLUENOTE CAFE proves to be not just credible but downright enjoyable. If there's a fault, it's that Neils' voice isn't truly equal to the job; his strength has always been a plaintive quality which works but doesn't quite "send" a lyric the way some of these could use. This is more than compensated by the trade-off solos he has with the horn section & the generally driving rhythm -- and if some of the songs are merely serviceable, the band still puts them across. Even my wife found it worthwhile, so I can confidently say this one is Way Worth Checking Out.P.S.: Careful credit readers will see that Billy Talbot & Ralph Molina of Crazy Horse only appear on the first two songs (from late 1987). The remainder feature Rick Rosas & Chad Cromwell, who would also appear on subsequent NY albums like FREEDOM.
