Thorgaginn
After two disappointing follow ups to 1981's career skyrocketing "Mistaken Identity", Kim Carnes found her self slowly slipping away from public view. Despite having minor hits along the way, Carnes had been unable to win over the people who swooned over "Bette Davis Eyes". Surprisingly, in 1985, Carnes was now back in the limelight again with a top 50 album and a single peacefully sitting at number 15. The album "Barking At Airplanes", her 9th album overall, is much more experimental and new wave leaning than any of her past recordings. Due to the jittery and anthemic "Crazy In The Night (Barking At Airplanes)" the album brought Kim Carnes back into the public mind."Barking At Airplanes" is easily one of Kim Carnes' most consistent and ear pleasing album. It's sonic textures are all over the place with the haunting ballads "Oliver (Voice On the Radio) and "Rough Edges" to the surprisingly Caribbean flavored "Touch and Go". However, the album does save time for Carnes' signature smokey vocals, specifically in the rocker "Begging For Favors (Learning How Things Work) which features Lindsey Buckingham on backing vocals and guitar.Overall, "Barking At Airplanes" was, and still is, an incredibly effective revival of Kim Carnes. It carries her signature ballads and show Carnes and co. being more adventurous than in the past. Sometimes the album does reveal it's time period, but for the most part it's going to pleasantly surprise anyone that's only expecting "Bette Davis Eyes" mach II. Final Rating-7/10Stand-Out Tracks-"Crazy In The Night (Barking At Airplanes)", "He Makes The Sun Rise (Orpheus)", "Rough Edges" and "Oliver (Voice On the Radio)"
