While not denying Van Halen's first album is the most groundbreaking and influential, this, in my opinion, is the best of Van Halen. Every song is played with passion and ferocity. Has there every been a heavier VH tune than Loss of Control or Romeo's Delight? Eddie's solos are starting to venture out a bit more than the more straight ahead burners on the first 2 albums, which, of course, were brilliant. I love every tune on this record. Excellent playing, excellent singing, fantastic charisma and attitude from start to finish. One of the all time greats!

By the time Van Halen came into the 80s, they had to have known that to remain on top of the hard rock universe, they'd have to go a lot deeper. On Women And Children First, the music is a lot more intense and a lot more keyboard driven than their first two records. Also, the writing is some of their most clever and accessible of their career, making this album stand out as one of their finest. It mixes Roth's screams with Eddie's guitar pyrotechnics in such a way it becomes easily enjoyable. The party was still going on, but the band was changing, and so the only we could do was change along with it. Key tracks are And The Cradle Will Rock..., Everybody Wants Some!!, Take Your Whiskey Home, and Could This Be Magic?.

This was the first album by the band where I had a hard time remembering any highlights, save for Cradle Will Rock. Like their second album the playing is outstanding but the hooks aren’t there. I’m sure the band realized they couldn’t keep up the “party” atmosphere on every album. Why they chose this direction is not known but it’s definitely a let down for me.
