Ryan Adams' Prisoner is an immediately accessible and a consistently solid work, not a weak track on the album IMHO. The Don Was production is clear and full although it maybe feels a little too slick occasionally; sax, synth and piano interludes adorn the subdued guitar rock which contrast with Adams' early work that tended to be simpler and more direct. He still carries it off with enough sincerity to satisfy long-time fans; songs of a fractured relationship, loneliness, isolation and heartache after his divorce if not wholly original are presented, for the most part, with a refreshing optimism. There's darkness and melancholy, but there's also a maturity that avoids wallowing sentiment. This is an adult record that bears witness to life's trials with grace and wisdom.
Rose Of Winds
Sweetly painful is one way to describe Ryan Adams new offering. It's beyond depressing to being down right desperate, but that is part of what makes it a masterpiece. Adams wears the pain from his divorce right on his sleeve in plain sight and spares us nothing. Apparently while not great for the psyche, it provides a boost to Adams songwriting. From both a lyrical and just plain out song quality standpoint, this is the best batch of songs Ryan has given us since Whiskeytown's Strangers Almanac, and IMHO, that is the best record of the past twenty years. This one is an instant classic. I'm not sure if he was ever gone, but if he was Adams is back and then some.
Just a side note to the reviewer: Don Was appears nowhere in the liner notes as producing any of this album aside from being a "Hostage Negotiator/Righteous Dude" which is presumably an A&R credit. This album was self-produced by Ryan Adams.
Another impressive piece of work from Adams. A real grower which gets better with each listen. The opening track 'Do You Still Love Me' should set the rocky tone but the record is a little more acoustic driven, with some stand out songs being 'Doomsday', 'Shiver and Shake' (inspired by Springsteen's 'I'm on Fire' perhaps?) and 'Breakdown'. Not quite on the level of his self titled LP from 2014 but not far off. Recommended.

Tube amps, loud and recorded to tape. This is a fantastic, timeless record displaying everything I love about the analog sound!
Another letdown from an artist who never really lived up to his early promise.
